Tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistar a la banda inglesa, Johnny Foreigner, a la espera de su cuarto disco de estudio llamado You Can Do Better, placa que saldrá publicada a partir del 10 de marzo a través de Alcopop! Records y será el seguimiento de su disco publicado en el 2011 llamado Johnny Foreigner vs Everything. Preguntamos sobre los inicios de la banda, su música, sobre su nuevo disco y la incorporación de un nuevo integrante y otras cosillas más.
Un poco de historia. Johnny Foreigner es una banda de rock indie de Digbeth, ubicada en Birmingham, Inglaterra. La banda comenzó junto a Alexei (guitarra y voz) y Junior (Batería) en el 2005, luego en el 2006 se les unió Kelly (bajo y segunda voz) y para terminar, en el 2012 llegó Lewes
(segunda guitarra), hombre que siempre ha hecho las obras de arte de los discos de la banda.
Han grabado 3 álbumes, 9 eps y aproximadamente 9,000 otras canciones. Son una banda de indie rock DIY de trabajo. Liberan a través de Internet sus registros y sus giras. y el cual están tratando de ir a todas partes, para siempre.
A continuación te hacemos la invitación para que leas completamente la entrevista que realizamos al vocal y guitarrista de la banda, Alexei Berrow.
¿De dónde nace el nombre Johnny Foreigner y cuál fue la inspiración de crearlo?
Es una broma!, Johnny Foreigner es una frase inglesa de 1970, un insulto ligeramente racista cuando nuestro país estaba asustado por la inmigración. Nuestra banda se sentía como Johnny Foreigner, porque éramos nuevos, acabábamos de llegar, no encajamos y todo el mundo se burlaba de nosotros, incluso aunque nos pasamos el rato en los mismos clubes, bares y escenarios.
¿Cómo se han visto en estos últimos años como agrupación?
¿Cómo hemos cambiado? Creo que hemos llegado a ser de alguna manera más relajada y más enojada al mismo tiempo!. Sin duda nos hemos vuelto más autosuficientes, estamos bastante independientes y hemos aprendido mucho de las habilidades no musicales, así que no tenemos que pagar o depender de otras personas.
¿Cuál fue su inspiración para hacer música rock – noise y no hacer algo más pop?
Creo que las mejores melodías son las que se encuentran cubiertas en el ruido. Debajo de las guitarras y la agresión, creo que escribimos buenas canciones pop, espero!. Todavía me encanta la música pop tanto como el rock, pero sólo tenemos más diversión con el ruido y la distorsión.
Hablando de su estilo musical, cuando los conocí como banda hace un par de años, me enteré de su tema Salt, Peppa And Spinderella, y me dije a mí mismo, «es la voz de Kele Okere de Bloc Party». Mi pregunta es ¿nunca les han dicho que son similares a bloc party o cualquier otra banda en particular?. (En mi forma personal digo no)
¡No! Kele tiene un acento de Londres y yo tengo un acento de Birmingham, esos tipos de acento en UK suenan muy diferente!. Extrañamente Russell Lissack de Bloc Party hizo una remezcla de una de nuestras canciones, y también hemos salido de gira con otras bandas de Gordon Moakes (bajo en Bloc Party). Pero nosotros no estamos conectados con ellos de ninguna otra manera.
¿Sienten que su música alrededor de los años ha trascendido, o siente que están atrapados en un estilo particular?
Estamos más o menos en la misma banda. Felizmente estamos atrapados en un estilo.
La banda tiene una cierta importancia en el mundo, han participado en diversos festivales alrededor de la orbe. ¿Has visto la diferencia entre su público en Inglaterra en comparación con otros países en los que han actuado?
Creo que el público del Reino Unido son más difíciles de complacer, ya que son bombardeados con nuevas bandas y nuevas canciones. Los fans japoneses están locos, los niños estadounidenses están dedicados, algunos países más pequeños apenas parecen contentos de que una banda ha llegado a verlos. Pero, en general, la música inspira las mismas emociones y reacciones dondequiera que estemos en el mundo, es una sensación impresionante.
Recientemente lanzaron su primer single (Le Sigh) perteneciente a su cuarto álbum de estudio que llevará por nombre «You Can Do Better», el single me hizo recordar a las canciones de su gran álbum Waited Up ‘til It Was Light, ¿Podríamos considerar que las canciones del nuevo disco pueden recordar a ese disco o algo más nuevo e innovador en comparación con su último disco?
Es difícil para nosotros juzgar, porque estamos dentro de nuestra propia burbuja!. Al igual que si uno creció con el pelo largo y se viste igual todos los años, sería mucho más notable para mí que a ti. Es mejor no pensar mucho en ello, en caso de que pierda la chispa, como un mago que explica sus trucos, preferimos mantener la magia!. Dos malas metáforas en una respuesta, lo siento!.
¿Cuáles fueron sus influencias para este nuevo álbum y si son la misma en comparación con los discos anteriores?
Ahora tenemos dos guitarras y eso suena mucho mejor como banda, así podemos robar más ideas!. Nuestras inspiraciones podríamos considerar a Jimmy Eat World, Smashing Pumpkins, North of America, Pavement, Weezer, etc, son grupos que siempre hemos amado, pero solamente ahora podemos empezar a utilizar algunos de sus trucos. En cuanto a las letras y el concepto, esto es también, probablemente, el más registro más oscuro y enojado que hemos hecho. Nos hemos convertido en las personas aburridas de los finales felices!.
Dentro de sus foros o redes sociales, ¿han recbido mensajes pidiendo a la banda en Sudamérica, como Chile, Argentina, Brasil o en otro país?
Un montón!, es muy frustrante, porque queremos tocar en TODAS PARTES PARA SIEMPRE. Pero los vuelos cuestan mucho dinero, así que es normal que no podamos llegar allí. Es una molestia constante, porque nos piden en todos lados y eso nos preocupa, ya que la gente tiende aburrirse de nosotros al momento en que podemos darnos el lujo de ir a ellos.
Hablemos de la música fuera de Inglaterra y Estados Unidos, la cual se encuentra el mercado más grande de música en el mundo, ¿Conoces alguna banda que cante en español y escuches continuamente?
Ha, no, yo no lo hago. Ni siquiera había pensado en ello antes y ahora me siento muy ignorante, porque la música debe trascender en el lenguaje. No es necesario hablar el idioma para entender la emoción y sentimiento en la música. Esta noche voy a google a buscar «bandas indie rock de habla hispana». Los ingleses son muy, muy perezoso; Hablamos una sola lengua!, mal!.
¿Cuáles son los planes para la banda para este 2014?, aparte de lanzar su nuevo disco y de su correspondiente gira por Inglaterra. ¿Tienen otras fechas fuera de su país?
Este año vamos a recorrer Europa, Japón y Sudáfrica, pero siempre estamos abiertos si algún productor en otra parte del mundo quiere ponerse en contacto con nosotros para viajar, ir a nuevos lugares, es una parte importante de por qué nos gusta tanto esto. Es un privilegio y una gran suerte de hacerlo.
Cuéntenos de la incorporación de Lewes Herriot a la banda. ¿Cómo fue la química entre ustedes con Lewes?, viendo el punto que siempre fueron un trío.
Lewes ha hecho todas nuestras obras de arte desde 2007, somos todos amigos cercanos, así que la buena química lleva un largo tiempo. De hecho, le preguntamos hace unos 4 años si quería a unirse a la banda, y hace muy poco tiempo decidió hacerlo!.
Entrevista en Ingles (sin trollear por mi inglés)
Johnny Foreigner is an indie rock band from Digbeth in Chicago’s twin city. Alexei and Junior started the band in 2005, Kelly joined in 2006 and Lewes, who has always done our artwork, joined in 2012.
We have recorded 3 proper albums, 9 eps and approximately 9000 other songs. We are a working DIY indie rock band. We release records and tour. we’re trying to go everywhere, forever.
We’re signed to Alcopop in the UK, Swerp in America and Vinyl Junkie in Japan. We want to be our own favourite band. We get described as culty, but it’s an open clique. We care.
Johnny Foreigner, Where the name comes from and what was the inspiration for this?
It was a joke! Johnny Foreigner is a 1970s English phrase, a slightly racist insult when our country was scared about immigration. Our band felt like johnny foreigner because we were new, we’d just arrived and didn’t fit it and everyone made fun of us, even tho we hung out in the same clubs and bars and scenes.
How to see the step as a band over the years?
Do you mean, how have we changed? I think we have somehow become more relaxed and angrier at the same time! We have definitely become more self-sufficient; we’re pretty independent and we’ve learnt a lot of non-musical skills so we don’t have to pay or rely on someone else.
What was the inspiration to do rock music, noise and does not do more pop?
I think the best melodies are the ones you find covered in noise. Underneath the guitars and the aggression I think we write good pop songs. I hope! I still love Pop music as much as Rock, we just have more fun with noise and distortion.
Speaking of his musical style, a beginning when I met them, a couple of years ago, I heard Salt, Peppa and Spinderella, I thought to myself, «is the voice of Bloc Party Kele Okere», my question is never have said they are backed bloc party or any particular band? (In my particular I say no)
No! Kele has a London accent and I have a Birmingham accent, to someone in the UK they sound very different! Strangely tho, Russel from Bloc Party did make a remix of that song for us, and we’ve toured with Gordon’s other band. But we’re not connected with them in any other way.
Do you feel that your music around the years has transpired, or feel they are stuck in a particular style?
We’re pretty much the same band. Happily stuck in a particular style?
The band has a certain significance worldwide have participated in various festivals around the world, through the United States, Australia and more. Did you see the difference between your audiences in England compared to other countries where they have acted?
I think UK audiences are harder to please because they are bombarded with new bands and new songs. Japanese fans are crazy, American kids are devoted, some smaller countries just seem happy that a band has come to see them. But generally, the music inspires the same emotions and reactions wherever we are in the world, it’s an awesome feeling.
They recently released their first single (Le Sigh) their fifth studio album which will be called You Can Do Better, upon hearing reminded me of songs from his great album Waited Up ‘til It Was Light, are the songs from the upcoming disk can remember that disk or something newer and innovative compared to their last album?
It’s hard for us to judge because we are inside our own bubble! Like if you grew your hair long and I saw you every year, it would be much more noticeable to me than you. It’s best not to think about it too much in case you lose the spark; Like a magician explaining his tricks. We’d rather keep the magic! Two bad metaphors in one answer, sorry!
What were your influences for this new album and if they are the same compared to the previous ones?
Now we have two guitars there’s a lot more bands we can steal ideas from! So, bands like Jimmy Eat World, Smashing Pumpkins, North of America, Pavement, Weezer, etc, are groups we have always loved, but it’s only now we can start using some of their tricks. In terms of lyrics and concept, this is also probably the darkest/angriest record we’ve made. We’ve become bored of happy endings!
Within their forums or social networks, have had messages asking the band in South America, such as Chile, Argentina, Brazil or another country?
Plenty! It’s very frustrating, because we want to play EVERYWHERE FOREVER. But flights cost a lot of money, so it’s not often we can get there. It’s a constant annoyance because we’re asked so much, we worry that people will have become bored of us by the time we can afford to go to them.
Let’s talk about music outside of England and the United States, where the largest market for world music. Do you know any bands that sing in Spanish and continually listen?
Ha, no I don’t. I never even thought about it before and now I feel pretty ignorant, because music should transcend language. You don’t need to speak the language to understand the emotions/sentiment in the music. Tonight I am going to google “Righteous Spanish-speaking Indie Rock”. English people are very very lazy; we speak one language only! Badly!
What are the plans for the band from 2014 to throw the disc and its corresponding tour of England, would not have scheduled outside your country?
This year we’re going to Europe and Japan and South Africa, but we’re always open if any promoter in other parts of the world gets in contact travelling, going to new places, is a major part of why we enjoy this so much. It’s a lucky privilege for sure.
Incorporating Lewes Herriot the band, how was the chemistry between units and new member, have always thought that a threesome?
Lewes has done all our artwork since 2007, we’re all close friends, so we knew the chemistry was right a long time ago. In fact, we asked him to join about 4 years ago, he just took ages to decide!
