Esta semana, NME publicó su lista de los 100 mejores artistas más influyentes y al igual que su reciente lista de los 500 mejores álbumes , es seguro de obtener mucha reacción.
Desde el mismo inicio, NME elimina actos como The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones y The Who, porque «no están directamente informando dela música que se toman hoy … La influencia es un concepto fluido, por lo que en lugar de simplemente inclinar nuestras gorras a las leyendas, nos propusimos cuantificar cuáles son las mayores influencias en la escena musical de hoy en día».
Eso no explica la omisión de los actos mas recientes como Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, Wilco, Elliott Smith o Daft Punk. Tampoco explica por qué David Bowie y The Velvet Underground, dos actos que existieron al mismo tiempo que The Beatles, Dylan y Rolling Stones, están incluidos.
En cuanto a la propia lista real, hay un buen número de colocaciones interesantes. The Cure viene en el lugar número 99 detrás de los actos como de bandas como Iceage y Black Lips. Black Flag y Nine Inch Nails están en el lugar N º85 y 84, respectivamente, casi 10 puntos detrás de Best Coast y Vampire Weekend. Wu-Tang Clan viene en un punto detrás de Grimes en el n º 73. Mientras tanto, Tame Impala se sitúa por delante de Led Zeppelin, T. Rex y Television.
