Por primera vez en la historia, la totalidad de las sesiones de Basement Tapes de Bob Dylan estarán disponible para el público en general. La colección que saldrá a cabo el 04 de noviembre, cuenta con seis discos y se extiende por una cantidad de 138 pistas, 30 de los cuales nunca se supo que existieron. Varios otros temas han existido anteriormente sólo en grabaciones piratas bastante malas.
Viniendo en las secuelas post accidente de motocicleta de Dylan en 1966, las sesiones vieron a Dylan and The Band en retiro de Woodstock, Nueva York. Se procedió a grabar más de 100 pistas juntos, algunos de los cuales fueron entregados a otros artistas, entre ellos Manfred Mann (“Quinn the Eskimo”), The Byrds (“You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”), y Peter, Paul and Mary (“Too Much of Nothing”). Las versiones de Dylan de estas canciones surgieron por primera vez en el bootleg de 1969 Great White Wonder, y más tarde se les dio un lanzamiento oficial en 1975.
Anteriormente hemos escuchado una versión temprana de «Odds and Ends«; hoy, Columbia / Legacy estrenaron una toma alternativa de «Lo and Behold!”. Grabado cuando Dylan tenía 26 años de edad, la balada folk caprichosa muestra a la leyenda de la música romper en un ataque de risitas en mitad del proceso de la canción.
La colección cuenta con una gran cantidad de material inédito: una «rockera apocalíptica» llamada «Wild Wolf«; una primera versión de «I Shall Be Released» con diferentes letras; un cover de Hank Williams a su canción «My Bucket’s Got a Hole In It» de 1949; y las versiones «country» de «Blowin’ in the Wind”, “It Ain’t Me Babe”, y “One Too Many Mornings”, con el tecladista Richard Manuel aplicando como voz principal en el primer verso.
La edición de lujo del álbum también incluye un libro de acompañamiento de 120 páginas con notas extensas y fotografías inéditas. También estará disponible una versión más concisa apodado The Basement Tapes Raw con 38 pistas en dos discos o tres LPs.
The Basement Tapes completas sirve como la entrega número 11 de los The Bootleg Series de Dylan, un proyecto de archivo que se remonta a principios de 1990. También coincide con el lanzamiento de Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes, disco que ve a un supergrupo de rockeros populares como Jim James, Marcus Mumford de Mumford and Sons, Elvis Costello, Taylor Goldsmith de Dawes, Carolina Chocolate Drops. My Morning Jacket, Rhiannon Giddens, y T-Bone Burnett – creando la música para dos docenas de letras recientemente descubierta de la era The Bootleg Tapes.
