Los nominados a Mejor Drama incluyen Boyhood, Foxcatcher, y The Theory of Everything. Mientras tanto, Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel, y St. Vincent obtuvo nominaciones a Mejor Comedia.
La categoría de Mejor director se encuentra a Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel) contra David Fincher (Gone Girl) y Richard Linklater (Boyhood). Anderson y Linklater también ganaron nominaciones al mejor guión por sus respectivas películas.
En la categoría de Mejor Actor de Drama, Steve Carrell (Foxcatcher) se enfrentará a Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) y Benedict Cumberbatch (Nightcrawler). Reese Witherspoon (Wild), Rosamund Pike (Gone Girl), y Jennifer Aniston (Cake) recibieron nominaciones a Mejor Actriz de Drama.
Mejor Actor Musical / Comedia incluye Joaquin Phoenix (Inherent Vice), Bill Murray (St. Vincent), Christoph Waltz (Big Eyes) y Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel). Mejor Actriz Musical / Comedia, por su parte, cuenta con Helen Mirren (The Hundred Foot Journey), Amy Adams (Big Eyes), Julianne Moore (Map to the Stars) y Emily Blunt (Into the Woods).
La categoría a la mejor canción es especialmente emocionante, ya que cuenta con Lorde con «Yellow Flicker Beat«, Lana Del Rey con «Big Eyes«, Patti Smith con «Mercy Is«, y Sia con «Opportunity”. Y el trabajo de Trent Reznor en Gone Girl le valió una nominación a la Mejor Banda Sonora Original.
